Office Refurb on the Cheap: Ikea Vittsjo Hack

Since I've been staying home and working a little on the side, I've really wanted to create a small space in the corner of my formal living room (my favorite room in the house!) that would inspire me and help me to feel like I'm doing more than emailing from my couch.  But, I definitely knew I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on these efforts.  When I found the VITTSJO desk and bookcase, I knew they were the perfect size and look for the gold office space I was envisioning.  All I'd need is some gold spray paint!!

So, yesterday, my hubby was kind enough to help me spray these pieces with Rust-Oleum Gold Metallic Spray Paint.  Both the desk and bookcase were sprayed with about 2 and a half cans total.  That stuff definitely goes faster than you think!  No primer needed on these pieces!

Best Part?  The desk, shelving unit and spray paint came in around $90.  And, while I did purchase a few containers for storage from Target, I was able to style both pieces with things I already had around the house.  Now I just need a chair!!

So, there it is!!  I'm still playing with the gallery wall and I need a chair, but I'm definitely happy with the direction it's going!  I love how feminine and glam the gold feels.  Not bad for $90! :)

DIY: Graphic Stripe Painting

I've actually been having a lot of fun painting lately!  I'm definitely not very good at it, but it's fun being able to customize them to the individual color palettes within my house and finding the perfect place for them!  And, a couple of weeks ago, all canvases were 50% off at Joann's, so I picked up a couple and have just been waiting to get my hands on them.  Luckily for me, Jacob actually ASKED to paint this morning!

He painted the Ninja Turtles of course...

And, I decided to take on an idea that I had for one of the canvases I picked up.

Here's what you'll need...
-A Canvas
-Some tape:  I used scotch tape since I didn't have any painters tape.  Bad idea.  Get painters tape.
-Black Paint
-Gold Paint
-A Paint Brush

Super simple!!

 ^^First, gather your supplies!

^^Then, use tape to tape off your lines.  Use one horizontal stripe to anchor the design.  I prefer no vertical, but play with it!  It could work!

^^Use the black paint to paint all but one line.  Choose one line to paint gold instead. Let it dry a bit, then pull off the tape.

^^Yay for a new painting for my office space!  Can you tell I'm obsessed with stripes (ahem...blog header)

I would definitely suggest getting painters tape.  My scotch tape kept coming up, so several of my lines had bleeding paint:(  Oh well!  I still love it!  :)  And, here's the preview of my new little office corner in my formal living room.  I'm working on refinishing my desk and bookcase, so I'll post a little tour as soon as that's done.  Here's a sneak peek! :)

New Camera. New Perspective.

This weekend Pete and I invested in a DSLR camera.  We've been talking about it for quite a while now and, with Disney coming up and baby Sadie making her arrival, it seemed like the perfect time!  While sticker shock was definitely part of the equation, I have absolutely no shoppers remorse after spending the weekend with it.  The quality of photos is amazing and it's so fun learning how to shoot in manual mode to get those gorgeous, soft shots of my kiddo that I love on other bloggers' posts.  It's definitely been a learning process!  I took some shots at our church picnic yesterday in aperture priority mode and messing with some of the other settings, but our time at the park this morning shot in manual mode really gave me better results!! Check out my kiddo in all of his park play cuteness...

I'm so excited and thankful to have this camera to record all of our family experiences in the clarity and sweetness that they really exist in.

YAY for a new hobby!! :)

Free Weekly Household Planner Template

I may be nesting.  It has yet to be confirmed, but my crazy amount of energy and intense need to organize and de-clutter is a definite indication.  Outside of all the cleaning and re-organizing I'm doing, I'm also trying to get a handle on scheduling out my week to manage my time doing my freelance work, doing chores, spending time with Jacob etc.  Whoever said being a stay at home mom is easy breezy was crazy town.  It's actually amazing how we were survived being so far behind on keeping our finances organized, our household paperwork filed and just general living under control...  not to mention the deep cleaning that was being ignored.  And, one would think that now that I don't have to go into work every day, handling all of these things would be well under my control... NOT SO.  Meal planning, appointment schedule, library returns, cleaning out entire rooms, redecorating, AND trying to earn some extra income on the side with freelancing- it's quite a task.  So, in all of my efforts, I'm going to try to share a few things with you that I come up with to help myself get by.  Being the crazy person that I am, everything starts with a list.  When I was working in the office every day, I'd start out my Mondays by planning out my week.  I finally decided it was time to get back into that routine at home, but was having a hard time finding an easy worksheet that would allow me to plan all of the things I needed to plan out on a daily basis.  Everything I found was either too intense (i.e. hour by hour scheduling) or not enough (just a daily calendar with no weekly to do list or meal planning section). So, I came up with this.  Here's the link to your FREE WEEKLY HOUSEHOLD PLANNER DOC for your downloading pleasure!

The individual components are as follows...

Daily Calendar:
This includes a blank section where I write in appointments, activities with Jacob, cleaning projects, work tasks etc.  I create a master list on a separate sticky note and then allocate tasks to individual days.

Meal Planning:
Under each day, there's a "meals" section.  For me, I didn't need this to be a huge portion of the daily box.  I don't plan breakfasts or lunches, really only dinner.  We get basics like cereal, waffles, bread, lunchmeat and chicken salad every week, so there's no need to include a lot of space for 3 meals a day.  However, on the weekend, we may get some fresh baked muffins for breakfast or plan on going out to lunch, so I made sure there was still enough room for writing that in.

To Schedule:
This is where I am THE WORST!  I really needed a section where I could list any appointments that I would have to schedule that week.  Doctors appointments, home repairs- I'm always putting those calls off.  So, this is a place where I can jot it down to remind myself to get it done.

To Buy:
While I have a separate grocery list, this is the perfect little space to remind myself to pick up a birthday present for a friend, new shoes for Jacob or order something I need for around the house.

*I suggest starting a file of blank worksheets and then hanging four/five at a time above your mailing/bills station for easy Monday planning access and daily views.

I hope that maybe this little worksheet will work for you in planning out your week!  There are so many out there; finding the right system for you can be daunting.  How do you stay organized?  Do you have a written down system or do you just go for it?  Later this week, I'll be sharing my new financial organization system that I'm trying to get comfy in.  SUPER excited about that one!
So, stay tuned! :)

Our Baby Girl's Nursery Design!

It's official!  WE'RE HAVING A GIRL!!!  Her name will be Sadie Elizabeth and she will be all sorts of stupendously precious.

So, of course, now that we know the sex of our little bundle of joy, it's time for "Operation: Decoration" as my super fab friend, Meggy B., would say.  I came up with a couple of designs, one being a little less "baby" than the other (the "less baby" included some hollywood regency esque elements that I so love).  But, my friends and family convinced me to go with this one, and I have to say, they're totally right.  I LOVE this design, much to the disdain of my husband and his aversion to wallpaper hanging, painting and paneling.  Hey, if I'm going to do this on the cheap, it's going to require some extra measures, k?! :)  However, we are accepting applications for paneling and wallpaper hanging friends.  We'll buy you pizza!! :)

If you followed THIS POST, you'll see that I combined a bit of the ornate french flair (see: gold gilded surfaces, ornate silhouettes and linen galore) of the first design with the colorful creativity of the second (see: wallpaper and rug!).  It'll be perfect for our little, spunky princess.

Here's how you get the look...

1) Wallpaper: Graham & Brown
2) Some DIY Paneling: We did this in our dining room and it's easily the cheapest way to upgrade the overall impact of a space!!
3) Window Panels by Nate Burkus via Target
4) White Jenny Lind Crib via Target
6) Hanging Pendants.  Still trying to find these in stock.  I may have to find an alternative if I can't.  I'm on the waiting list on Gilt.com
7) Most amazing rug via Lulu & Georgia:  Currently on the waiting list!!
8) Chic Rocker via Target
10) Faux Sheepskin Rug via Ikea
11) Chartreuse Lamp via Kirklands
12) Faux Agate Accent Table via Target
13) Vintage White Dresser: The one we're actually purchasing has gold hardware and I plan on customizing a bit with some paint.  Changing pad will be placed on top.  We're purchasing ours from a local vintage consignment shop.
14) Rococo style mirror for gallery wall.  We already own one, but you can purchase a similar frame via Ikea and spray it gold.
15) Frames via Ikea

And, don't forget the fresh flowers!!! Every princess needs blooms.

Can't wait to share "after" photos with you all!! :)

16 Weeks Pregnant!

Yesterday marked 16 weeks!  Only 2 weeks left until we find out the sex of the baby and I'm finally gaining a little weight.  My weight fluctuated around a three pound difference pre-pregnancy, but I'm thinking that after losing in the first trimester, I'm up 1-2 lbs now.  I have my 16 week appointment tomorrow, so I'll get the official word then!  I gained a little too much with Jacob, so I definitely want to keep my weight under control this time by staying active and making healthy choices.

Another reason I need to keep my weight gain down is to make sure my body is ready for a VBAC.  It's definitely something I really want, so I'll be asking my doctor tomorrow for more details and scheduling a consultation with a doula.  I always wanted the natural birth experience with Jacob, but since he was measuring so large, I ended up scheduling a c-section.  They estimated that he was going to be close to 11 lbs, but he was only 8.6.  I now know that my body can do this and that I have to trust it.  I just have to prepare for it and give it the time that it needs!  Any experiences with VBACs, incorrect measurements or doulas?

On another note, I'm feeling little flutters!!! It's so sweet and is finally making me feel like I'm actually pregnant!!  It was hard to believe there for a while... :)

...excuse the creepy red eye :(

Be Inspired by a Quiet Mind.

I've been quiet over the past few days because I've really just been in a "blah" mood.  I know I'm being moody and super sensitive, and I feel like my emotions are completely beyond my control!! Not true, I know.  Sometimes I get in moods where I'm just unsatisfied.  I want to be doing, moving, decorating, working, making major life moves, anything but staying still.  I find it difficult to relax, to just breathe and sit back in the quiet of nothingness.

I'm sure part of this has to do with the fact that I really haven't stopped moving since I was fifteen.  I was always in several clubs, involved in several projects, working a couple of jobs and developing other interests, such as a marriage, a child, an education and a career along the way.  My pursuit of perfection and blatant disregard for the virtue of patience have always gotten in the way of my ability to be still.  And, now that I'm staying home, it's like I have to address this fear of not moving, even though I'm definitely doing a lot of physical moving with a three year old at home!

So, in this time of transition, I just want to take in the beauty of my life, the beauty of my babies, my husband, my family and my friends.  Instead of trying to find new things to make pretty, I'll focus on the pretty that's already present.  Because, while staying in the present is sometimes harder than reaching for the future, the quiet mind is ever more inspiring.
